A barbershop visit is really four decisions: choosing a clipper grade for the sides, picking a fade height, deciding how the top is cut and styled, and selecting any upgrades such as a hot towel or shape-up. Bring one or two reference photos, describe what you want in plain language, and let the barber adjust for your face shape and hair type.
Here is the short version of what to know before you sit down.
Clipper grades 1–8 — what each one looks like
Barbers use "grades" to describe how much hair the clipper leaves behind. Each grade is roughly 3 mm.
| Grade | Length (mm) | Look |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0.5 | Almost bald, scalp visible |
| 1 | 3 | Very short, scalp shows through |
| 2 | 6 | Short, sporty |
| 3 | 10 | Short-but-not-too-short |
| 4 | 13 | A safe middle ground |
| 5 | 16 | Some weight on the sides |
| 6 | 19 | Long enough to comb |
| 7 | 22 | Easy to part and sweep |
| 8 | 25 | Close to a scissor cut |
If you are unsure, start at a 2 or 3. Going shorter from there is easy. Going longer means waiting weeks.
How to describe a fade
A fade blends shorter hair at the bottom into longer hair on top, smoothly. The "height" where the fade starts is what gives each one its name.
- Low fade — starts at the level of the ear lobe; subtle, office-appropriate
- Mid fade — starts around the temple; balanced, the most popular choice
- High fade — starts above the temple; high contrast, sharper look
- Skin fade — the shortest section taken down to grade 0 (skin); can be combined with low, mid, or high
You can describe it in plain English: "mid fade, starting at the temple, leave about an inch and a half on top." Most Thai barbers also understand the English fade terms directly.
Hot towel, beard trim, shape-up — the upgrades worth knowing
Most barbershops will offer add-ons. Three that are worth the extra spend:
- Hot towel — a warm towel before or after a shave; opens the pores and relaxes the face
- Beard trim — clean lines along the jaw and neck, added on for very little extra time
- Shape-up (line-up) — sharp edges at the hairline and nape; makes the haircut look fresh for an extra week or two
Add-on pricing usually sits between 100 and 300 THB. Confirm at booking or before you sit down.
A reference photo always beats words
Even when you know the vocabulary, bring images. Your "mid fade" and your barber's "mid fade" can be quite different.
How to prepare:
- One front photo, one side photo
- Pick someone with a similar hair type to yours (straight or wavy, thick or fine)
- Show it first and say "something like this — adjust for what suits my face"
Barbers prefer this approach because it removes guesswork.
Tipping and how often to come back
Tipping is not mandatory in Thailand, but 50–100 THB is a normal gesture if you are happy with the result. For maintenance:
- Short cuts with a fade: every 3 weeks
- Medium-length cuts: every 4–5 weeks
- Longer styles: every 6–8 weeks, mostly to trim ends
Pick a shop near home or your office so coming back is easy — for instance a barbershop in Bangkok, barbershop in Chiang Mai, barbershop in Nonthaburi, or a barbershop in Phuket.
In short
A first barbershop visit is straightforward once you arrive with a reference photo, a rough idea of clipper grades, and a fade height in mind. Let the barber refine the rest — and book your next slot before you leave so you keep the same chair.
